Prakash Javadekar has represented India at a number of International Forums in the capacity of Union Minister. Prior to becoming a Union Minister also, he has made a number of official visits abroad, starting right from 1985, when he visited the USA to participate in the Young Political Leaders Programme (ACYPL).
He has especially played a very important role in portraying India’s standpoint at the International Platforms as Union Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.
UNFCC
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an International environmental treaty adopted in 1992 which has near universal membership with more than 190 countries being signatories to the convention. The main objective of UNFCCC is to “stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent global rise in temperatures”.
The parties to the Convention have met annually from 1995 in Conferences of the Parties (COP) to assess the progress in dealing with climate change. In 1997, the Kyoto Protocol was concluded and it established legally binding obligations for the developed countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions during the period from 2008 to 2012. The Kyoto Protocol was amended in 2012 to encompass the period 2013–2020 in the Doha Amendment.
In 2015, that is, during the tenure of Prakash Javadekar as Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Paris Agreement was adopted, governing emission reductions from 2020 on through commitments of countries in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), with a view of keeping the rise in global temperature under 2 °C.
Prakash Javadekar has represented India in the UNFCCC COP conferences three times held in various countries and played an important role in presenting India’s views before the world.

The overarching goal of the conference was to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) to limit the global temperature increase to 2 degrees Celsius above current levels.

The twenty-first session of the Conference of Parties (COP) served as the Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP) and resulted in the adoption of the Paris Agreement under UNFCCC.

India showed leadership and reiterated its commitment towards implementation of the Paris Agreement in its letter and spirit and to act collectively to address the issue of Global Climate Change.
PETERSBERG CLIMATE DIALOGUE
The Petersberg Climate Dialogue has been hosted every year by Germany since 2010 and aims to provide a forum for informal high-level political discussions, focusing both on international climate negotiations and the advancement of climate action.

UN CLIMATE SUMMIT
The UN Climate Summits attract the attention of world leaders, from government, the private sector and civil society, on the urgency for action to address the climate emergency, and on increasing climate action.

BASIC MINISTERIAL MEETING
The BASIC countries are a bloc of four large newly industrialized countries – Brazil, South Africa, India and China. The signatory nations are committed to acting together at the United Nations Climate Change Conference. Prakash Javadekar has represented India in the BASIC Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change four times held in India, China and Brazil and played an important role in presenting India’s views on mitigating Climate Change.

THE MAJOR ECONOMIC FORUM
The Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate (MEF) was launched on March 28, 2009 to facilitate a candid dialogue among major developed and developing economies and to help generate the political leadership necessary to achieve a successful outcome and advance the exploration of concrete initiatives and joint ventures that increase the supply of clean energy while cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Prakash Javadekar has represented Indian in the Major Economies Forum four times held in various countries.
